|
Looking for a little feedback from the experienced bogger. I'm a rookie, but I finally have 2 events under my belt, the 2nd one being just tonight where I didn't make it through after drawing first straw. I've been using 1st gear in 4 Hi. I did get a chance to shift to 2nd last week, and pulled a decent time in a washed out pit. I'm watching the winning trucks go through 2 and 3 gears in their run and am thinking they got to be in Lo range. If anyone has any feedback that would help, I'd surely appreciate it. Also, what is the best way to set up an automatic shifter? Thanks, Ed.

Unless you have way low gears and small tires you have to run low range! As far as shifters the best one I`ve ever run was a cheap hurst indy-matic ratchet shifter.

Thanks for the reply. I've got 5.38 gears w/ 44" boggers in the rear and 4.88 w/ 39.5 boggers up front. It's a '79 Ford P/U w/ 521 ci and a C6 with a forward manual valve body. Is there an electric or air shifter worth checking out? If so, any recommendations to trigger it without changing my MSD 6A box?

Sounds like a serious truck! Still, run low range, even if you run 2nd and 3rd. You need to try everything to see what works best with your heads and cam combo.
I`ve personally never had any luck with any electronic or air shifters that are rpm controlled in deep pits. If it upshifts too soon from a little slime on the start you are pretty much done. Plus if you need to down shift you still need to pull the stick. What I did on my F-150 was mount the shifter up near the wheel so I could reach it fast even if there was a bunch of steering involved. And I kept the power steering for the control.
I kind of miss that type of racing and am considering the "hill and hole" stuff also for in the future.

I run a stretched samari with a bb chevy, I run reverse valve body, I run a 7al3 with a Shifnoin setup it runs with 2 **** point from 2 selecter boxes from 1st. to 2nd. then 2nd , to 3rd, at what rmp I select, now it is perfect for top ground or a fast pit, But soon as i put it in a bog i unplug it and shift manualy, like Missile said really touchy in deep holes, sounds like u have a nice truck but i would still run low range, cause if u can hit drive you will get great wheel speed and gain your hp back when u hit drive. _________________ Fat Rich...."Rebel Hill Racing"........"If you can't Dog it Don't Bog it" MRA # 151, PIT Classes 4,5,6. Thanks! I'll definitely go with Lo range the next chance I get. Look like mid July at this point, not much going on around here that I can see. We'll see what happens then.

Sounds like a heck of a truck, but I'm going to agree on the low range. Low range 2nd will be a bit lower than high range 1st, so it should get you out of the hole better. And low 3rd would be about halfway between high 1st & 2nd.
All this assuming a 2:1 t-case & 3 speed auto tranny. _________________ Scott Graham

For me it all depends on the pit.
A real lose (wet) pit that doesn't look real deep...I might run 4-hi-1st, but most of the time I do the 4-lo deal. For me I've found that even there I have choices. One pit I managed to start in 2nd and go to 3rd...other times I have gone 1->2...and yet another time I did 2->1. But in low with my truck I have the option of shifting to keep the rpms where I want them unlike 4-hi where I would be stuck in 1st no matter what (until I spray it).
my setup is
350/350/241 with 5.13s _________________ Brian Morrison

Good stuff guys! I know this thing is a lot of trial and error, but your guidance will definitely help.
