I am putting together a dana 44 and want to here some opions on the geat sets. I have been told that a 3 series gear set was the strongest gear over any other set. but when I went to my local gear shop they told me a 4 series with a slow speed carrier would be stongest. It doesnt matter what gear I put in I just want to try to get the strongest set I can from the start.

I run a dana 44 in the front of my car and I still have the stock 3.54 gears that came in it. I haven't broken anything in it yet and I've had it for three years in the car. Mine came out of the early broncos so it was a natural for my car. I do the gear reduction thru the chain drive I have. Makes it easy and strong. Just my 2 cents.

The 4 series carrier is not any different than a 3 in strenth, not enough to measure anyways.

However... the 3 series gears are stronger due to the bigger pinion gear. I run 4.88`s in my pickup and the pinion is like 1.75" dia. with like 6b teeth. Good thing it has a tiny motor! The best bet for what you want to do is run like 3.54`s or 3.08`s with like 10 teeth. You will break spiders before r&p`s then.

Thanks for the help. I think I will go with the 3.08

I ran 4.56's in the front with 39's and 36's and with a bbf, used for mud drags and never broke the r&p, only axles and spiders, and that was usually from catching air
